About Us

Scrabble SA is a not-for-profit association, and operates on a non-commercial basis.

Its sole income at present derives from club and event fees from affiliated clubs, annual fees from active members and donations.

Any surplus is directed towards the achievement of its objectives, which are:

  1. To create, build and maintain communities of players in the form of Clubs and to grow members, particularly among the youth and the previously disadvantaged.

  2. To provide for the benefit of these members such as training, tools, amenities, equipment and opportunities required for the pursuit of the game, and the social activities ancillary to it

  3. To actively market and promote Scrabble as a sport, recreational and educational activity and to identify and encourage the qualification of individuals as coaches, arbiters, trainers and tournament organisers.

  4. To organise or facilitate Regional championships for senior and junior players, with access to physically challenged players and to select representation - and where possible provide funding - for International events.

  5. To keep accurate records of members local and international ratings in accordance with the requirements of the governing body WESPA (World English-Speaking Players Association) and to foster a spirit of healthy competition and fair play among all members

Where To Find Us

There are registered clubs in Gauteng and Cape Town and along the Garden Route. The format of play at these clubs is based on competitive play; the games are played with a clock and they are not “open dictionary” but rather encourage players to play words they know and challenge words they suspect are incorrect. All clubs provide “newbies” with a comprehensive list of the permittable 2 and 3 letter words in order to keep the flow of the game. As members become more familiar with the format, tactics and time restrictions, they are encouraged to enter local competitions where they can compete with others at their rating level.

While these clubs are learning spaces, they are also social in nature and well placed in the community for easy access
